DIMAPUR/WOKHA — Along with the rest of the world, Nagaland celebrated World Red Cross Day across the state on Monday, with commemorative programmes organised on the theme “Everything we do come from the heart”.
Mokokchung: Dr. Takosunep Ao, Honorary Secretary Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), highlighted the seven fundamental principles of Red Cross namely humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality, during a programme held at the office of Chief Medical Officer. He further added that the IRCS Mokokchung district branch formed in 1988, like its parent body, is a neutral and impartial organisation to help those who are suffering because of both man-made as well as natural calamities.
Exhorting the audience, Dr. Kibangkumba, Chief Medical Officer and Vice Chairman IRCS, cited the example of late Dr. Sentiyangba, whose intervention by waving the flag of the Red Cross amid the incident that occurred at Mokokchung on Dec. 27 1994, saved many lives. His intervention not only exhibits the strength and power of the Red Cross but also his personality as a dynamic person who works for humanity, he said, according to an update. He encouraged the JRC to be the first to reach the spot in times of disaster to help the people. He quoted, “we live in deeds, not in years.”
Zunheboto: Celebrating World Red Cross Day, Deputy Commissioner and chairman of IRCS Zunheboto district branch, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, said one should always help neighbors irrespective of caste or creed and it should always come from the heart. He added that humans have the ability of reasoning and making things right and encouraged everyone to always have a clear conscience and help one another.
Secretary of IRCS Zunheboto, Dr. G Hokishe Sema, chaired the meeting and delivered the keynote address. In his keynote address, he explained the significance of Red Cross Day. He further added that the supply of relief materials (blankets, clothes, kitchen materials, soaps, etc) to fire victims under Zunheboto will be given in a few days, adding that the team will also be visiting the orphanage home at Sukhalu village to supply blankets in a few days.
Wokha: Wokha district also celebrated World Red Cross Day at DC’s Conference Hall, Wokha with ADC Wokha, Furhesie Nyuwi as the special guest.
Speaking during the programme, Nyuwi said the day is celebrated for the remarkable humanitarian efforts of the Red Cross movement, and people acknowledge and honor the tireless work of the Red Cross volunteers and staff who wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to promote humanity across the globe.
He said everything they do comes from the heart and it is through the power of compassion, empathy, and selflessness that the movement continues to make a difference in the lives of millions. He urged everybody to pledge support to the mission of alleviating suffering and promoting humanity.
“May your acts of kindness inspire us all to embrace the true spirit of humanitarianism and create a world where compassion knows no bounds,” he added, according to the update.
T Penthungo Lotha, Principal Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, speaking on the theme “Everything We Do Comes from the Heart,” said in this celebration of the goodness of human beings, everyone should remember the values of compassion and goodwill in society,as making a small effort to assist someone in need may have a significant impact on the community.
During the programme, Secretary of Red Cross Society Wokha Unit, Dr. K Z Ovung handed over relief materials to nine beneficiaries.
Longleng: The IRCS, Longleng District Branch observed the World Red Cross Day along with the rest of the world at DPDB hall, Longleng with SP Longleng, Pritpal Kaur, as the special guest.
The special guest acknowledged the Red Cross Society, Longleng Branch for the wonderful work done since 2004. She also said the Red Cross societies in every state have a different scenario and one must know the significance. She said there is no discrimination in the organisation and everyone is treated equally, adding that it must go with equality. She appealed to the students to always be ready to help the needy, which is the main objective of the organisation. She also said the definition of war has changed; unlike before, war won’t come around holding guns, but it will come in the form of laziness, alcohol, drugs etc., which must be eradicated from society.
During the occasion, the special guest also inducted students from five schools as Jr. Red Cross Society Longleng.

Kiphire: IRCS Kiphire in collaboration with Akehda Amulung celebrated World Red Cross Day at Good Shepherd High School Kiphire on Monday.
The guest speaker for the occasion, Lipichem, delivered a speech on universal human and diverse aspects of the Red Cross movement, highlighting the history and background of Red Cross.
The speaker shared his experience of donating blood and encouraged students and fellow members to reach out in any way they can, to help and be a change maker.
Dr. Dheni, District Epidemiologist, delivered a short talk on health and hygienic living; he highlighted the importance of hygiene, taking an example on COVID-19. He said it was a good example for all in learning about keeping a healthy body, adding that good health gives confidence and concentration in studies.
Longtili C Sangtam, founder and chairman Akehda Amulung, showed the participants a short clip on history of Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, while a song was presented by Good Shepherd High school.
