ZLSU urges exemption of government teachers from ULB election duty
DIMAPUR — The Zeliang Students’ Union (ZLSU) Nagaland has raised concerns in view of the upcoming urban local bodies (ULB) elections that it may impact the students and normal functioning of the schools.
In a letter to the deputy commissioner and district election officer of Peren, the ZLSU expressed deep worries about the impact on students’ careers if teachers are once again deputed or assigned as polling officials for ULB elections.
It reminded the DEO of the recent Lok Sabha polls in the state, during which government schools were disrupted and forced to remain closed due to the deputation of teachers on election duty.
Stating that there are around 80 departments in the state government, the union said that it would be wise on the part of the government to choose/assign departments other than the education department to execute the related works for the forthcoming elections as it only covers urban areas.
It urged that, for the sake of the welfare of the student community, government teachers be exempted from being assigned as polling officials for the forthcoming ULB elections.
