DIMAPUR — The Yongkhao village council (YVC) under Mon district has appealed to the state government to construct a new school building, which was damaged by landslide in 2018.
The appeal was made during a joint meeting of teachers along with the members of Yongkhao Village Council, Yongkhao Students’ Union, Yongkhao Changlu Village Council, Eyeang Students’ Union and representatives from other three villages on Saturday held at the office of Yongkhao Students’ Union on the theme “Envisioning the future of school.”
An update from the village council stated that the present GMS building in Yongkhao is a temporary and makeshift structure constructed by the village council, in collaboration with the students’ union and SMC as the previous school building was totally damaged by landslide in the year 2018 during rainy season.
It mentioned that same was published in the local newspapers and an appeal was made to the department of School Education for restoration. It expressed regret that despite a lapse of six years, the school is running in a dilapidated building with inadequate classroom and teachers.
“Though the school has good number of enrollment from pre-primary to class 5, we are unable to upgrade due to inadequate classroom and teachers,” the statement read.
It added that the three village councils namely Yongkhao, Eyeang and Yongkhao Changlu solely depended on GMS Yongkhao for upper primary education.
Meanwhile, the members during the meeting have resolved to upgrade the school to class 6 from the next academic year.
In this regard, Yongkhao Village Council has agreed to sponsor one graduate teacher, while the Eyeang Village Council has agreed to sponsor one primary teacher and Yongkhao Changlu Village Council has agreed to construct one classroom.
It further stated that one teacher namely Bupai Konyak has agreed to sponsor one primary teacher.
