Work hard but not at the cost of your wellbeing, students told
KOHIMA — Develop a sense of responsibility and awareness of what is just and right, Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Hiazu Meru, told students during the 25th Anniversary of the Poimi Students’ Union Kohima, which was celebrated on the theme ‘Onwards blessed posterity’ at SIRD hall on Saturday.
When one has a clear vision, one can bring about changes in the society, he added.
Maintaining that competition is stiff in today’s world while job avenue in the government sector is saturated, he urged the students to equip themselves with skills for gainful employment.
He also requested student organisations to inspire and motivate young minds, as well as conduct career counselling programme for the student community.
Peren district is lagging behind economically and educationally, he said, urging the students to work hard and progress in life.
Mental health issue
Dr Zaiwang Zeliang, deputy director of STI and nodal officer for IHC, NSACS, Department of Health and Family Welfare, said that mental health is plaguing the society today with youth facing immense pressure due to the cut throat competition and high expectation from their families and society.
She told students to work hard but not at the cost of their wellbeing, especially their mental health, which has become a topic of concern. She also suggested young people to make time to refresh themselves and adopt habits that can benefit them in the long run.
Speaking about HIV and AIDS, she pointed out that there is an alarming rise of the disease among the young people despite creating awareness. This, she said, was not expected as the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) has been spreading awareness, especially among sex workers and drug users.
The message and awareness programme in the form of Red Ribbon Clubs clearly have not hit home, she added.
Other highlights of the programme included presidential address by Namyiteulung Poireng and speeches from representatives of several civil society organisations — Poilwalui Nagaland, Poimi Nkwa Kohima, Poilwa Village Council and Poilwa Students’ Union.
