DIMAPUR — The recent landslide that blocked the Kohima-Dimapur National Highway 29 on September 4 has emphasised the importance of the Niuland-Kohima road (via Ghotovi-Zhadima) as a crucial link to the state capital.

This alternate route, while currently serving as a crucial connection to the state capital, faces limitations due to its condition. The road is open to small and light vehicles; however, heavy vehicles are restricted from plying the road at all times, due to its narrow width and weak culverts.

On Wednesday, representatives from at least seven villages in the Niuland-Ghotovi area met with the minister in-charge of the Public Works Department (Roads & Bridges), G Kaito Aye, urging the government to prioritise its upkeep and ensure its reliability.

According to a source, during the meeting, the representatives reiterated the need to complete the road construction project given its importance, especially during emergencies.

While no firm commitments were made, sources said that the minister acknowledged the road’s significance, noting its connection of four districts — Niuland, Wokha, Tseminyu, and Kohima — and its potential to significantly reduce travel time.

He reportedly assured to raise the issue with the government and seek a solution.

The minister also acknowledged that while some sections have seen improvements, several other sections require attention. Having visited the area multiple times, the minister is said to be aware of the road’s benefits and committed to working towards its development as an all-weather road during his tenure, sources said.
