United Sangtam Students’ Conference knocks on Catholic Church’s door to establish college in Kiphire
DIMAPUR — The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has requested the Catholic Church in Nagaland to aid the ‘rising number of students’ pursuing higher education in the district by establishing a college.
In a letter addressed to the Bishop of Kohima, the USSC highlighted the remoteness of Kiphire—located at the easternmost corner of the country, bordering Myanmar.
“Despite rising demand for higher education, Kiphire currently relies on a single government college, which does not meet the needs of the many students pursuing higher education. There are seven feeding higher secondary schools within the district.
“Each academic year, thousands of students graduate from these secondary schools, along with others from neighbouring districts, who aspire to continue their education. Yet, only a few gain admission locally, leaving the rest to seek opportunities outside the district, which is often financially or logistically unfeasible for many families,” the letter read.
Accordingly, the USSC sought the bishop’s support in establishing a new college in Kiphire district headquarters, “with a focus on offering Science and Commerce streams to meet the high demand among students.”
“This institution would not only elevate educational standards in Kiphire but also provide a secure future for our students by equipping them with the knowledge and opportunities they need close to home,” it reasoned.
