DIMAPUR — Returning Officer (RO) and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Wokha Town Council, K Furhesie Nyuwi, informed all concerned that the voter information slip (VIS) is merely to help the elector get information about his/her status in relation to the election.

It was clarified that the VIS should not be treated as the equivalent of other identification documents required of a voter for entry into polling stations and for casting votes.

According to a DIPR report, no elector will be allowed to exercise their franchise unless they produce any of the documents prescribed by the State Election Commission.

The accepted documents include Indian passports, driving licences, Aadhar cards, service IDs issued to employees by the state/central government, public undertakings, public limited companies, bank or post office passbooks with photographs, PAN cards, pension documents with photographs, and indigenous inhabitant certificates issued by the DC/ADC.

It stated that no other ID card would be accepted at the polling station.

Niuland: A similar notification was also issued by DC Niuland, Sara S Jamir, specifying that for identification purposes, electors should present any one of the mentioned documents.

It was clarified that documents available only for the head of the family shall be permitted for identifying other members of the family as well.

Also, any documents in the name of any other member of the family could be used for the identification of other members, provided those members can be identified based on such documents.

It further mentioned that minor discrepancies in the entries relating to the elector’s name, father’s/mother’s/husband’s name, sex, age, or address in the electoral roll shall be disregarded.

The elector will be allowed to cast their vote as long as their identity can be verified based on the particulars appearing in the electoral roll and to the satisfaction of the presiding officer or polling officer.
