Training on DAKSHATA underway in Dimapur

DIMAPUR — A three-day district-level training on DAKSHATA for medical officers and nurses (second batch) under Dimapur district got underway on August 31 in the conference hall of the District Hospital, Dimapur.

DAKSHATA is an initiative of the Government of India aimed at strengthening the quality of care during and immediately after childbirth through focused and customised training for strategic skill-building of healthcare providers on high-impact essential practices.

An update from the office of the chief medical officer (CMO), Dimapur, stated that Dr. Longri Kichu, UNICEF consultant, highlighted the goals and objectives of the training and conducted pre-training knowledge and pre-training objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) assessments of the trainees.

He also sensitised the trainees on the safe childbirth checklist, how to ensure quality care in the labour room and ways to empower birth companions. He emphasised preparation for safe delivery and essential care for the mother and newborn after delivery.

He further demonstrated essential newborn care and newborn resuscitation.

Dr. A Yanrenthung Jami, senior specialist (Gyn. & Obs) at Dimapur District Hospital, highlighted the stages of labour, management of threatened preterm birth, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, triage and monitoring vitals.

He stressed the importance of using partographs in labour rooms to monitor the progress of labour and to identify prolonged and obstructed labour. He further discussed complications in newborn and newborn infections.

He further demonstrated on active management of third-stage labour.

The report stated that sessions on postpartum haemorrhage, puerperal sepsis, infection control, labour room organisation, care for small newborns etc. would be taken on the last day. It added that post-training knowledge and post-training OSCE assessments would also be carried out to certify the trainees as DAKSHATA trained.

It further mentioned that the department of Health and Family Welfare has been striving to upgrade the skills of healthcare workers to save mothers and newborns and also improve the overall quality of services in the healthcare service delivery system.
