DIMAPUR — An inception meeting and brainstorming session were held on July 8 at Barad Sadan, Sikkim University in Gangtok, to launch the project titled ‘Assessing health of the high altitude lake (HAL) Tenbawa and ecosystem sustainability in response to changing climate in the Lachung valley, Sikkim Himalaya’.
The initiative, led by the department of Geography, Nagaland University (NU), is funded by the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), according to a press release.
Dr. Manasi Debnath, the project investigator, is an assistant professor in the department of Geography at Nagaland University. She specialises in climate change and its effects on the Himalayan cryosphere, including glaciers, glacial lakes, rock glaciers, and permafrost.
Her expertise also includes paleoclimate and geochronology, environmental hazards, and geomorphology.
Participants at the event included representatives from Nagaland University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and GBPNIHE-Arunachal Pradesh, as well as members from Sikkim University, the Sikkim Department of Science and Technology (Sikkim DST), the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, locals from north Sikkim, and research scholars.
