No gas pipeline installation in Chakhroma jurisdiction, says CYO
DIMAPUR — The Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) has reaffirmed its decision not to allow the installation of the proposed gas pipeline within its jurisdiction.
The decision was taken at a joint consultative meeting of the CYO and the concerned villages at Medziphema Town on September 25, according to the press release received here on Friday.
‘Taking into consideration the multiple incidents that have occurred in various states, resulting in bursting of gas pipeline and leading to loss of lives and properties despite all the safety measures, we have fear and apprehension that the introduction of gas pipeline project along the NH-29 will endanger the lives of the people, as we have many villages along the stretch of the National Highway,’ it said, adding that there are many area prone to landslide, mudslide, rockslide etc. between Chümoukedima and Piphema.
It also said that Nagaland is vulnerable to major earthquakes as it falls under Seismic Zone- V.
“We have a very poor and unorganised infrastructure which only adds to more serious emergencies. Although this gas pipeline may be for the greater convenience of gas market and the economy, it has its demerits and drawbacks beyond reasonable doubt which can lead to loss of lives and properties even on a slightest mishap or technical breakdown,” read the press release.
“Therefore, taking into consideration various factors, and after a healthy deliberation and discussion, it was unanimously decided that it is not feasible to install the gas pipeline within the jurisdiction of Chakhroma,” it continued.
It further cautioned the Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) contractor to refrain from undertaking any developmental activities, saying that it will be held entirely responsible for any untoward incidents.
The CYO also reiterated its stand that it “will be the only mandated organisation to forward the grievances of the affected landowners”.
