DIMAPUR — The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) organised a three-day skill development training programme on fish preservation and value addition from July 2 to the 4th.

Held in collaboration with ShishoiOshim-ETF Cell Wokha, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Wokha, and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Wokha, the event took place in Wokha and Sanis towns, with participation from 25 young entrepreneurs, according to a DIPR report.

For the event, expert resource persons were invited from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region (ICAR-RC for NEH), Umiam, NFDB-North East Regional Centre, and officers from the Wokha District Fisheries office to share their knowledge and expertise.

The training emphasised the importance of hygienic handling of fish and covered various preservation methods, including icing, freezing, drying, smoking, fermenting, and canning.

Participants also learned to prepare value-added fish products such as pickles, cutlets, sausages, pakoras, fish fingers, and fish balls, which present lucrative revenue opportunities for unemployed youth with minimal investment.

As part of the programme, trainees visited the “Fish Processing Unit” at Sanis for demonstrations and hands-on training in preparing fish products. The programme also included awareness sessions on various governmental schemes and subsidies available to support these entrepreneurial initiatives.
