WOKHA — A newborn baby was found dead inside a washroom at Panacea Nursing Home in Wokha town in the morning of September 22.
Sources informed that the baby was found dead, left inside a trash can, by one of the workers at the nursing home during a laundry and cleaning routine.
It was informed that the mother, a teenager, had come to the health centre at around 8 pm on September 21 and requested to use the washroom. Next morning, the newborn baby was found dead.
The mother was reportedly in police custody even as police officials declined to provide further details citing the sensitivity of the case.
The incident drew condemnation from the Lotha Eloe Hoho, who also went on to accuse the mother of committing infanticide.
“Such a barbaric act not only violates the sanctity of life but also shocks the moral conscience of our society. The deliberate and senseless murder of an innocent child is an affront to humanity, and the Lotha Eloe Hoho stands firm in its absolute denunciation of this crime,” it stated in a press release.
It called upon the government, its agencies, and every citizen to rise against the “heinous act and work together to ensure swift and uncompromising justice”.
“The perpetrator must be brought to book without delay and dealt with according to the full extent of the law, ensuring that a fitting punishment is meted out. Such an atrocity must not go unpunished,” it stated.
