DIMAPUR — In a prelude to the 5th edition of Nagaland Honey Bee Day 2023 scheduled on December 5, Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) conducted a painting competition for students of Dimapur and Chümoukedima in its multi-utility centre at 6th Mile in Sovima village, Chümoukedima, on November 10.
The event was also aimed at creating awareness on the importance of bee-keeping and the role that honey bees play in the society. An update from the mission stated that a total of 24 students from 12 schools participated in the competition wherein the winners were awarded exclusive prizes and certificates.
Speaking on the occasion, Khuvozoyi Vese, NBHM deputy team leader, mentioned that bees are the only insect species that provide the utmost service to humanity and its survival.
“Eighty percent of all flowering plants depend on honey bees for their pollination and their products are consumed by humans either directly or indirectly,” Vese said.
Vese informed that even in the context of Nagaland state, bee-keeping has become of the best revenue generating sources for the farmers.
“Today I’m proud to say that even for a small state like Nagaland we are able to produce about 440 metric tonnes annually,” he informed.
He further stressed on the need to appreciate the immense contribution made by honey bees not only towards the environment but also in providing revenue for the famers and the state.
In the painting competition, Moalemla Longkumer of Class 9 from Hollotoli School won the first prize, while Sudip Bisaws of Class 9 from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and Linali Sumi from Delhi Public School won the second and third prizes respectively.
Consolation prizes were given away to Tolla Imlong of Class 10 from Maple Tree School, Aswaria Bahattacharjee of Class 9 from Holy Cross Higher Secondary School and Tinghoithing Hansing of Class 9 from Delhi Public School.
It informed that cash prizes for the top three winners would be handed over during the Nagaland Honey Bee Day on December 5.
