Dimapur, March 12 (EMN): In an attempt to cleanse the education system of proxy teachers appointed by regular employees to teach in their place, the Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK), apex body of Sumi Students’ Union, has decided to undertake surprise visits to all government schools in Sumi areas and ensure strict action is taken against the defaulters.
President of SKK, Katho P Awomi said during an interaction with journalists in Dimapur on Saturday that if teachers are found letting a substitute teach on their behalf, the union would appeal to the state government to terminate them from their services without any compromise.
He informed that the decision for crackdown on illegal practice of keeping proxy teachers through a resolution during the union assembly on March 11, where agenda pertaining to the student community in Sumi-inhabited areas were discussed.
He stated that the union sincerely want proper and strict functioning of government schools and institutions and is completely against the practice of keeping proxies.
The union has asked the government teachers to “strictly be in service and no one on their behalf should teach the students”.
“Those teachers who cannot teach students or be in service should voluntarily resign, and further the government can recruit anyone who can be in service,” he said, adding that the village councils must also ensure that schools don’t have a single proxy teacher.
SKK also stated that the government teachers should not be attached to any legislator or other officers, claiming that some teachers, without teaching at their posted areas, “get transferred to other offices through ‘arrangements’”.
They are recruited as teachers and their service is to be teachers, Awomi said.
Stating that many government schools in Sumi-inhabited areas were facing shortage of teachers, the union appealed to the government not to entertain or transfer any teacher to other institutions.
Further, it appealed for strict implementation of mid-day meal and other schemes and programmes for skill training.
It also appealed to the state government and directorate of School Education to take action on non-performing schools and institutions.

‘SKK is going to strictly observe and take action regarding the road condition in Sumi-inhabitant areas including both Central and state-sponsored roads,’ he said, adding that the union will be filing RTI with the appropriate authority on the projects taken up over the past five years.
They also appealed to the contractors and government departments to ‘rectify with the union within a month’ if there are any loopholes or discrepancies.

To ensure that all the resolutions passed at the union assembly are implemented, SKK appealed to the public to contact the office bearers to lodge complaints against government offices, officers, schools and institutions involved in any wrongful activities, with evidence.
Further, SKK informed that it will be holding its general union assembly; all the constituent units and presidents of all Sumi village student unions have been invited to the assemblage.
