Nagaland observes ‘Human Rights Day’

Dimapur/ Wokha, Dec. 10 (EMN): The 16-day activism against gender-based violence culminated coinciding with the celebration of ‘Human Rights Day’ on December 10 across the state on the theme ‘End violence against women now.’

In Wokha, the programme was held in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner organised by district administration, in collaboration with Sakhi-One Stop Centre and DLCW Mahila Shakti Kedra (MSK).

In a keynote address, SDO (C) and nodal officer of BBBP, MSK, OSC, Selemla Sangtam expressed concern to note the absence of women in the policy making bodies despite excelling in various fields. She felt that problems and issues of women could be addressed effectively with representation of women in such bodies.

She stated that volunteers from DLCW-MSK and Sakhi-One Stop Centre conducted door-to-door campaign to spread awareness to end violence against women during the activism. She encouraged womenfolk to voice out their rights in-order to bring about gender equality and continue working to bring positive change for women. She further called upon the women to utilise the facilities provided for women through Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) and DLCW.

On the occasion, DC of Wokha Orenthung Lotha handed over essential commodities to women from five colonies in Wokha town.

The culmination of 16-day of activism against gender based violence and the celebration of ‘Human Rights Day’ was organized at Peren town hall on December 10. The event was organised by the district administration, in collaboration with Sakhi- One Stop Centre, Mahila Shakti Kendra and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Peren.

In another programme, students and NCC cadets of Don Bosco College in Kohima observed the ‘Human Rights Day’ on December 10. The students were accompanied by its principal Fr. Dr. P Suresh, director of Bosco Computer Center Fr. Christu Das, and dean of students affair Zavelu Vero and Rokovinuo.
