DIMAPUR — Government establishments and educational institutions in various district headquarters and sub-division across Nagaland celebrated the 78th India’s Independence Day on Thursday.
To mark the occasion various activities were conducted besides honouring certain persons for their achievement in different fields.
Mokokchung: Minister of Forest and Climate Change & Village Guard, CL John, unfurled the national flag and took salute from 13 parade contingents.
On the occasion, John also gave away the District Commendation Award 2024 to 9 individuals from various departments and District Commendation Award to SDFR Mokokchung for their diligent response to call of duty. Narola Imsong, Rank 1 HSSLC from Queen Mary Higher Secondary School, also received the District Topper Award by district administration and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under the aegis of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.

Cultural presentations by the Watemdong cultural troupe, Ungma and Gorkha unions and tug-of-war between Mokokchung officers and MMC councilors added hues to the celebration.
The programme was followed with inauguration of exhibition stalls set up by ATMA and Agri & Allied department by the minister.
Tuensang: Advisor of Information Technology and Communication, Economic and Statistics and Evaluation, H Sethrongkyu Sangtam, unfurled the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 16 parade contingent at Tuensang parade ground.
Highlights of the function included administering of pledge for a drug-free Nagaland, presentation of district commendation award, culture presentations, dog show by 29th Assam Rifles and inauguration of exhibition stalls by the chief guest.
After the programme, the chief guest accompanied by the DPDB members visited the relief camps in Tuensang village C/Khel and P/Khel.
Chümoukedima: Deputy Chief Minister and in-charge of Planning and Transformation and National Highway, TR Zeliang, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from parade contingents at Chümoukedima town public ground.
Zeliang also inaugurated the exhibition stalls represented by various departments and organisations showcasing the district achievements.
Other highlights of the programme included playing of Tati, folksongs by Vekhulemi cultural group, United Village and Kuwo (women folk dance) by Sumi cultural club from Chekiye, aerobic dance by students of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School and ARTC pipe band, Shoxhuvi.
Wokha: Advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan, unfurled the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 10 parade contingents at Wokha town public ground.
On the occasion, the chief guest gave away the district level awards to the government employees for their outstanding performances in their assigned duties and responsibilities. He also inaugurated the stalls put up by various departments and self help groups.
Other highlights of the programme included presentation of folk song and folk dance by Wokha Town Eloe Eramo Okho and Phiro cultural troupe and special presentation by the students of Perennial School, Wokha.
Mon: Advisor of Treasuries and Accounts, Art and Culture, Konngam Konyak, hoisted the national flag and inspected the parade contingents at Mon town local ground.
The advisor also gave away district commendation awards to 12 government employees in recognition of their exemplary performance towards their assigned duties. He also inaugurated the stalls set up by different societies and departments.
Other highlights of the programme included cultural dance by students of GHSS Mon town, song presentations by students of GHSS, Mon, Honya and friends and Yenwang Konyak. The NSS unit of Wangkhao Government College also made a presentation on the Konyak society during head hunting period.
Kiphire: Advisor of Land Resources, G Ikuto Zhimomi, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 11 contingents at Kiphire public ground as the special guest.
He also gave away the district awards and commendation certificate to 15 government employees on the occasion. Prizes were also given away to distinguished farmers from the district as well as winners of the district level quiz competition.
Other highlights of the day programme included presentation of ‘Mera Mulk Meri Dash’ by Wongto (Star Gaze), aerobic dance by students of Agape Higher Secondary School, potato song by DHO of Kiphire, Sentinungba Longchar, flash mob by RRC members of Loyala Higher Secondary School and cultural items.
The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition stalls set up by various government departments and civil societies.
Niuland: Minister of Rural Development and SIRD, Metsubo Jamir, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 12 parade contingents as the chief guest at Niuland town.
The celebrations witnessed a presentation of Karate demonstration by students of Regional Hughes Shaw Memorial School, drill display by Shepherd High School and band display by 7 Assam Rifles. Folks songs were also presented by Kuhoxu village women cultural troupe and Niuland Town Sumi Totimi Loka respectively.
The chief guest also inaugurated the exhibition stalls setup by various departments and organisations.
Peren: Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from the parade contingents at Peren new headquarters ground as the chief guest.
The chief guest also gave away the annual district awards to government employees, student achievers and sports persons from the district.
The event also saw entertainment performances by the students of Baptist Higher Secondary School, Peren, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Jalukie, as well as cultural dance by the students of Peren Government College.
Kenye also inaugurated the stalls put up by various government departments and other organisations.
Tseminyu: Minister of Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhuotuonou Kruse, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 7 parade contingents at Rengma Sports Association Ground in Tseminyu town.
The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition stalls setup by different departments and also inaugurated the static soil testing laboratory at Sub-divisional office (SC).
Folk song presentation by Lakethyu Logwa of Tseminyu village and a song by Runole Tep were the highlights of the day.
Zunheboto: Deputy Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, S Toiho Yeptho, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 14 parade contingents at public ground in Zunheboto town as the chief guest.
The chief guest also gave away the district award to 21 persons and NGOs and inaugurated the exhibition stalls setup by various government agencies and self help groups.
Ward-wise tug-of-war and exhibition football match between DC staff and Sumi Hoho were the highlights of the programme.
Shamator: Advisor of Youth Resource and Sports, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 7 parade contingents at Shamator public ground as the chief guest.
Administering of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ pledge, distribution of district awards and inauguration of exhibition stalls setup by various government departments and organisations were the highlights of the day-long celebration.
Phek: Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 17 parade contingents at local ground in Phek town as the special guest.
The special guest also gave away the awards to the best performing Anganwati workers in Phek district and inaugurated the exhibition stalls put up by Agriculture and allied departments.
Performances by students of Bishop Abraham Memorial School, Assam Rifles School and folk dance by Mutsale culture troupe were the highlights of the celebration.
Longleng: Minister of Housing and Mechanical Engineering, B Bashangmongba Chang, hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 7 parade contingents at Longleng town public ground.
The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition stalls set up by various departments and inaugurated the park ‘Ngei Bampu Longleng’ (I Love Longleng).
Highlights of the programme included presentation of district awards, female folk dance by Yaongyimchen Luli Longleng and male folk dance by the Nagaland culture troupe, Longleng.
Noklak: Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (MLA), P Longon hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya salute from 9 parade contingents at Noklak public ground.
Longon also inaugurated the exhibition stalls set up by various departments consisting Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Rural Development, Handloom and Handicraft, Health and Family, Land Resource, district administration, BYE Lengnyu village and self help groups’ union of Noklak town.
Other highlights of the day included bamboo dance by KGBV hostellers, skills display by Noklak District Taekwondo Association and folk dance by Tsuwao Village Guards.
High Court: The Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, commemorated India’s 78th Independence Day, where Justice Kakheto Sema, Portfolio Judge for Nagaland, hoisted the national flag and took the ceremonial rashtriya salute.
The programme was attended by the Judge of Gauhati High Court, Justice Mitali Thakuria, senior government counsels, office bearers and members from the High Court Bar Association, advocates, official dignitaries and employees of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench.
To mark the occasion, refurbished computer sets were distributed to Grade-IV employees and contingency staff of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench in acknowledgement of their noble services to the institution of justice.
SAS: The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema campus, celebrated the 78th Independence Day at the multi-purpose hall with the unfurling of the national flag by Prof. Akali Sema, pro vice chancellor.
In her speech, Prof. Sema emphasised on the theme ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ with special focus on youth, who are not only the leaders of tomorrow but the change makers of today. She also mentioned about this year’s budget with agriculture as the top priority to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and reminded the agriculture fraternity about their responsibilities in achieving the vision.
To commemorate the day, a tug-of-war competition was held between the pro vice chancellor (PVC) team comprising of teaching and non-teaching staff and the Dean’s team comprising of students.
TGOUN: The Global Open University, Nagaland, celebrated the 78th Independence Day at its campus in Chümoukedima, wherein the national flag was hoisted by Dr. HN Dutta, vice chancellor of the university, and followed with singing of the national anthem.
Dr. HN Dutta and Dr. Roopam Bachhil, registrar of the university, also addressed the gathering.
It was followed with distribution of prizes of the poster-making and reel-making competitions. In the poster-making competition, Kiheu Mbung of 1st semester won the first prize, while Runoni Tep of 5th semester and Inalivi Yeputhomi of 3rd semester won the second and third positions respectively. It stated that the reel-making competition saw creative participation from various departments, wherein the 5th semester of Hospitality Management department emerged as the winner.
SSP: Sainik School Punglwa (SSP) celebrated the 78th Independence Day with Col. Arvind Nautiyal, the school principal, as the chief guest, who also unfurled the national flag followed with singing of national anthem.
The chief guest emphasised the role of each individual particularly the cadets in realising the dream of making India a developed nation by 2047. The officer urged the staff and the cadets to pledge and devote themselves and contribute their bit in making this dream come true.
On the auspicious occasion, NCC cadets took out a rally with the tricolour with the objective to inspire and invoke the feeling of patriotism and to promote awareness about the ‘Tricolour.’
PVHSS: Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, celebrated the 78th Independence Day at the school premises, wherein the national flag was hoisted by the school principal, Monoj Bhattacharjee, who also delivered the motivational speech.
In his speech, Bhattacharjee paid tributes to the brave hearts for laying down their lives for the cause of India’s Independence.
The event saw presentation of various cultural item performed by the students and teachers.
RJHHS: Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, celebrated the 78th Independence Day at the school premises on the theme ‘Viksit Bharat,’ symbolising the vision of a developed nation by the year 2047.
The chairman of the school managing board, Bhabhuti Rai, who was the chief guest, hoisted the tricolour flag and followed with speeches delivered by the principal, teachers and students on the significance of the day.
The programme saw presentation of devotional and patriotic songs.
MGM School: MGH Higher Secondary School (MGMHSS) celebrated the 78th Independence Day by organising variety of programmes highlighting India’s freedom struggle and its march towards progress post independence.
On the occasion, the vice president of MGM School and MGM College, Fr. Giju George, hoisted the national flag.
In his presidential address, Fr. Giju George reminisce India’s glorious struggle for freedom. He stated that every one of has a responsibility to carry forward the spirit of freedom fighters until we get azadi from poverty, illiteracy and under-development.
NEISSR: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, celebrated the 78th Independence Day on the theme ‘Viksit Bharat.’
The national flag was hoisted by its vice principal, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Khing, followed with singing of national anthem.
Fr. Khing stated that ‘Bharat’ is not something that one see in terms of infrastructure but development of its citizens through which the country gets more developed. He added that when an individual is developed (personality, quality, values, skills, knowledge etc), they become the asset of the country.
He, therefore, stated that the richness of the country comes from the richness of an individual person and not gold or silver or bronze.
He concluded by challenging the students to reflect on the possibilities as they celebrate 78th Independence Day.
AIDA: ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day by planting 100 fruit trees in Virazouma village, one of its ten project villages, with David Naulak, chief manager of SBI’s main branch in Dimapur as the special guest.
The celebration saw an active involvement from 46 participants, including the village GB, council members, women’s society, youth and students’ union office bearers, as well as both current and newly selected project beneficiaries.
The special guest shared valuable insights into the available bank schemes particularly the PM-SBI scheme, which offers INR 2 lakh insurance cover for just INR 20 per year.
Besides, he encouraged everyone to stay informed and fulfill their responsibilities, emphasising the importance of cooperation to ensure the success of the project and the potential for future development.
Sub-divisions including Tamlu, Pughoboto, Seyochung, Mangkolemba, Pungro, Bhandari, Pfutsero, Meluri, Chessore, Tening, Jakhama, Longkhim, Atoizu, Tizit, Aboi, Satakha, Medziphema, Chozuba, Jalukie, Thonoknyu, Tuli, Akuluto, Chiephobozou, Tobu, Aghunato and Nagaland House, New Delhi, also celebrated the 78th Independence Day.
