DIMAPUR — The Mokokchung District Blood Donors’ Association (MVBDA), in collaboration with 12 Assam Rifles, on Tuesday observed the National Voluntary Blood Donors’ Day at the conference hall of Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) in Mokokchung town on the theme ‘Share life, give blood.”

The deputy chairman of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), Lanuakum, who attended the event as the guest of honour, underlined the importance of donating blood. As the life span of blood stored in the blood bank is only 120 days, he stressed the need to replenish it with fresh batch of blood, which could be possible only through blood donation, stated a DIPR report.

He, therefore, urged the association as well as the medical fraternity and social organisation to sensitise the community on the importance of blood donation through various forms of media.

The president of MVBDA, Molo Jamir, said that National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is celebrated on October 1 every year to share the importance of blood in the life of an individual by motivating and encouraging people who are not aware on the importance of donating blood even though being a healthy person. He added that the day is celebrated to bring great changes in the society by following lifesaving service through blood donation.

The programme was chaired by Bendangtemsu Ozukum, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Makshi Jamir, DPO (DAPCU).

A special blood donation drive was carried out at blood bank of Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, where individuals from different walks of life donated their blood.

In a related programme, the District Hospital, Mon, celebrated National Voluntary Blood Donation Day at its conference hall on Tuesday.

As the district celebrates the first National Voluntary Blood Donation Day in its 59-year history of establishing health facilities, Dr. T Temsü, medical superintendent of DH Mon, commended all the participants for being a part of history. He expressed believe that within two to three years, Mon district would have surplus blood since the people of Mon have strong willpower and a right mindset.

“There are donors in the district; all we need to do is raise awareness and knowledge about blood donation, which is the goal of today’s celebration,” he explained.

He also explained in detail about why one should donate blood, who can donate, what to do before donating blood, the process before and after blood collection, and myths about blood donation.

Dr. Temsu also presented each donor with a certificate and a badge as well as a memento of appreciation.
