DIMAPUR — The anti sexual harassment cell of Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma (KSCJ), organised an awareness programme on cyber safety security on September 21.

Additional SP, Cyber Crime, Vizhatuo Michael Yhome, was the resource person for the workshop, which was attended by all the semesters students and teaching faculty of the college, an update stated.

In his speech, the resource person acknowledged the stark differences between the old and present generation with regard to survival mindset.

Yhome stressed on the importance of learning and adapting to new problems that inevitably arise with further technological developments, particularly cyber threats.

He discussed about the cyber crimes scenario of Nagaland which, he said, are broadly of two types – financial frauds and social media crimes.

Under financial frauds come various cyber crimes including phishing, lottery scam, OLX scam, etc.

The crimes that fall under social media are cyber stalking, impersonation, fake news, sextortion and criminal intimidation, amongst many others.

Yhome elucidated each of these topics in detail, enlightening the audience on how to recognise and evade such cyber crimes.

“We humans have lost sense of our values…We don’t know what it means to have real human connections anymore given how everyone is glued to their devices,” he remarked, while urging everyone to stay vigilant to various cyber crimes taking place.

“Much of his talk was infused with real-life instances and also acted as a helpful comprehensive tool for everyone in attendance,” the update stated.

Earlier, the college principal, Dr. Temjenwabang, in his welcome address, emphasised on the dangers and threats posed by the virtual world and rapidly-evolving of human civilisation.

He advised the students to pay heed to their “cyber hygiene” as much as they do to their personal hygiene.
