KOHIMA — A total of 28 teams, including 16 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams, from different schools will compete at the first inter-high school basketball tournament for Kohima district scheduled to be held from October 2 to the 4th at St Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Kohima.

The tournament is being organised by Kohima District Basketball Association (KDBA), in collaboration with ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, on the theme “catch them young”.

Executive members of the KDBA finalised the fixture in the presence of the participating teams and schools on Friday at St Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School Kohima.

Giving further details of the tournament, Tosovi Jordan Mekro, General Secretary of KDBA, said the association decided to organise the tournament to consolidate the passion for basketball among the youth.

Considering the importance of starting out at the grassroots, it aims to popularise the game among the high school students, he added.

With the first edition this year, he said they plan to continue in the future so that students can participate and develop their skills.

The games will be played on a knockout basis.

Two winners each of the boys’ and girls’ team will be awarded with INR 30000 for first and INR 20000 for the second position. Most Valuable Players will be awarded INR 5000 each and the best-disciplined team will be given INR 5000.
