Incessant rains wreak havoc in Aghunaqa areas
DIMAPUR — The unprecedented heavy downpour in the past couple of days has left the farmers of Aghunaqa areas under Niuland district in doldrums as most of the standing crops have submerged under water.
Considering the gravity of damage caused to their farm lands, the farmers were uncertain of harvesting crops this season unlike in the past years.
This was testified by the president of Western Sumi Hoho (WSH), Shikaho Zhimomi, in a conversation with this Reporter on Tuesday. Zhimomi informed that almost all the fields in Aghunaqa areas were affected due to the recent torrential rains.
Zhimomi claimed that large areas of land in Nitozu village, Qhuhoi village, Hukhai village and Zhekishe village were submerged in water.
Meanwhile in a press release, the Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) has sought immediate intervention of the state government to address the catastrophic situation of farmers in Aghunaqa under Niuland district, who have faced unprecedented hardships for over four to five years.
It stated that a devastation combining with COVID-19, natural disasters and recent torrential rains have pushed the farmers to the brink of collapse.
It stated that the latest deluge has ravaged their crops, properties and livelihoods, plunging them into unmitigated distress. As they struggled to come to terms with their losses, the hoho added that their situation demands immediate intervention and support.
“We implore the state government to take swift and decisive action to address the farmers’ grievances. This includes a comprehensive assessment of the flood damage, prompt relief and compensation to affected farmers and implementation of sustainable measures to counter the impact of natural calamities and climate change,” the WSH said.
Report stated that supporting farmers in rebuilding their lives and revitalising agricultural activities is vital at this critical juncture. While acknowledge the government’s efforts to address citizens’ needs, the hoho expressed hope that they would treat the crisis with urgency.
