KOHIMA — For no fault of theirs, children infected with HIV/AIDS are suffering, said Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, adding that they deserve a bright future like any other child.

The DC was addressing a charity event organised by Nagaland-based non-profit governmental organisation ‘You Are Not Alone (YANA)’, at The Heritage, Old DC Bungalow, Kohima on Saturday, with an aim to help HIV/AIDS-infected children and create awareness about the stigma surrounding the disease.

Marked by exhibition, fashion show and a musical concert featuring various artistes from Nagaland, the proceeds from the event will be donated to children infected with HIV AIDS.

Millions of people are affected by HIV/AIDS disease across the globe but the most affected are the children, the DC told the gathering, while expressing concern over the stigma associated with the disease despite the state coming this far.

While the disease have medical component, events like this (organised by YANA), where communities come together, are crucial in tackling HIV/AIDS, he added.

Speaking on the topic “Breaking the stigma”, Miss Northeast 2023 Kenei Ritse questioned why fear and misunderstandings overshadow empathy and support when it comes to HIV and AIDS.

She said the Saturday’s event was not just to raise awareness, but to break down the barriers of stigmas that have persisted for so long.

Stigma not only affects individuals but also hampers society’s growth, she said, while calling for reaffirmation of commitment to compassion and understanding, as well as urging the people to replace fear with facts, and isolation with inclusion.

“Let us amplify the voices of those affected and ensure that they are heard without judgment, but with open heart,” she added.

Convenor of YANA, Dr. Ahuto G Yeptho, said the project was initiated to support, encourage and empower people who are affected with HIV and AIDS to be valued, connected and dignified.

He added it is more than a celebration but a testament to the power of community support.

The event featured artistes including: Sentien Kichu, Kivito, Keneisenuo Sorhie, KL Pamei, Moko Koza, Abdon Mech, DJ Ina, and Kivito.
