DIMAPUR — Facing a shortage of classroom space, the Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) took the matters into their own hands by constructing temporary classrooms and staff room for the Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) ‘C’ in Mon town.

The SDO  of Mon, Rongsenmenla, inaugurated the facilities on Thursday, marking what the KSU called “a favourable and significant milestone for the community.”

While inaugurating the classrooms, the official praised the collaborative spirit of the KSU and the community, describing as an example of ‘what unity can achieve.’

She acknowledged the challenges in realising the project, particularly in securing both infrastructure and qualified teachers, adding that recruitment of B.Ed. and NET-qualified teachers was a good opportunity for the students and the community.

Stating that the initiative was taken up solely for their benefit, she advised the students to make the most of the opportunity and realise their potential as their success would enable them to contribute to society just as the KSU had done.

Despite the temporary nature of the classrooms, she emphasised the valuable resources now available, including the dedicated teachers, and urged the students to utilise those facilities to shape their future careers.

It may be noted that the initiative was taken up by the KSU to address the pressing need to access higher secondary education in the region after an estimated 1500 students in the region passed the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations in 2024.

While expressing gratitude to the chief minister, advisor of School Education, Konyak legislators and the department of School Education for upgrading the school in January this year, KSU has sought urgency of appointing permanent Post Graduate Teachers (PGT).

“The absence of adequate teaching staff poses a severe risk to the academic future of our students. We earnestly request the authorities to address this matter urgently to prevent any jeopardy to the students’ educational journey,” the KSU appealed.

It further acknowledged that the construction was made possible through the generous donations of well-wishers.

The KSU informed that GHSS ‘C’ has commenced its normal functioning with 101 students supported by six temporarily recruited PGT. While affirming its commitment for the educational rights and development of the community, KSU looked forward to continue its cooperation with the government and concerned authorities.
