Dimapur — District Legal Services Authorities (DSLAs) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) conducted awareness camps for prisoners, visited legal aid clinics and conducted other legal awareness programmes during the last few days.
In Wokha, the DLSA conducted awareness camps for prisoners with jail inmates and identified unrepresented prisoners at the district jail on July 11, an update stated.
District and Session Judge Nino Iralu, who is also chairperson of Wokha DLSA, spoke on rights of prisoners and also interacted with the UTPs and public prosecutor, Wokha, A Mhabemo spoke on POCSO Act. During the visit, there were 47 under trial prisoners (UTPs) and five convicts lodged at district jail.
Kiphire DLSA led by Chief Judicial Magistrate Phuleto Yeptho along with panel lawyer Lizi Sangtam and para legal volunteer Tsasela Sangtam, visited the district prison and interacted with the inmates. During the visit, there were two convicts and six UTPs. Yeptho inquired about the health of the inmates, hygiene in the jail and also if various basic facilities were being accorded to the inmates as per their rights.
They were also given opportunity to share legal or other grievances. Panel lawyer Lizi Sangtam highlighted the rights of the prisoners and booklet on prisoner rights were also distributed to all the inmates.
In Dimapur, the DLSA organised legal an awareness programme at the District Jail and Central Jail on July 6.
Retainer lawyer of Dimapur DLSA, Sonile Seb, and panel lawyer Sangto Longchar, the resource persons, spoke on legal services, rights of accused person, bail, trial and appeals.
On July 8, Kiphire DLSA also organised an awareness programme on four priority scheme at Pungro town.
The programme was attended by student bodies, village council members, Police department, EAC Pungro, AR Commandant, ASHA, Anganwadi workers, women organisations and church leaders.
Phuleto Yepthomi CJM- cum-secretary of Kiphire DLSA apprised on the role of district legal services authority and Lok Adalat; retainer lawyer Bendangwati, spoke on Right to Education; Micheal Aye, APP, spoke on Food Security Act and Lizi Sangtam spoke on Health and Family Welfare schemes.
Tsasela Sangtam, para legal volunteer, spoke on PMVVY Scheme and old age pension scheme.
On Saturday, Wokha DLSA led by panel lawyers and para legal volunteers visited legal aid clinics. The panel lawyers Renbonthung Tsanglao, Myingthunglo Kikon, Yangrothung Humtsoe, Jacob Kikon, Shanchobeni P Lotha and para-legal volunteers Tsanthungo, Ajano Ngullie, Mhajamo Khuvung, Wobemo Murry and Zuchobemo Odyuo, visited legal aid clinic at district jail, Longsa legal aid clinic, Bhandari legal aid clinic and Sanis legal aid clinic. During the visit, legal pamphlets in Lotha and English were also handed over to the legal aid clinic, the update stated.
