DIMAPUR — The Niki Sumi-led NSCN (K) has been found in violation of ceasefire ground rules, according to Lieutenant General (Retired) Amarjeet Singh Bedi, the chairman of Ceasefire Monitoring Group and Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB) in Nagaland.

Speaking to media persons after a meeting with representatives of the Niki-led group and the interim Dimapur area Naga Youth Organisation on Monday, Lt. Gen. Bedi stated that the group was also found to have misused its designated Ceasefire Monitoring Office in Padumpukhuri, Dimapur. He said that the CFMG/CFSB has requested for action to be taken against the individuals responsible for the abduction of two youths from Diphupar on October 10.

The chairman revealed that the NSCN (K), in a written statement, has committed to addressing the violations and informed him that ‘they will make all efforts to see that the culprits were brought to book as the individuals may have acted in their individual capacity.’

He said that the group had signed a ceasefire agreement with the government of India in September 2021, and it was further extended for one more year in September 2024. As such, the Niki-led group has committed to adhere to all the ceasefire ground rules, he added.

Lt. Gen. Bedi stated that the group has pledged cooperation with law enforcement agencies to apprehend those responsible, and the Ceasefire Supervisory Board has urged the group to promptly apprehend the individuals and hand them over to Nagaland Police.

He also said that the Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, also a member of the CFSB, assured that priority will be given to apprehending those involved. A search operation at the group’s Ceasefire Monitoring Cell Office has already been carried out, facilitated by the CFSB.

Furthermore, Lt. Gen. Bedi explained that the ceasefire agreements were signed with five Naga political groups: NSCN (IM), NSCN (K), NSCN (Reformation), NSCN (Niki), and NSCN (Unification).

While the ceasefire agreements aim to create a foundation of peace and trust to enable political dialogue, his role is focused solely on monitoring adherence to the terms of these agreements by the five signatory groups.

Any other political groups operating in Nagaland representing Naga people, fall outside his purview and the law enforcement agencies retain the authority to address any illegal activities by groups not bound by the ceasefire agreements, he said.

Following the meeting at Rhododendron Hall in Chümoukedima, the president of the interim Dimapur area Naga Youth Organisation addressed a gathering at Aoyimti village ground, where he conveyed that the NSCN (K) Niki group had acknowledged the ceasefire violations in writing. He stated that the group has assured that the individuals involved would be handed over to the state police.

He added that the CFMG/CFSB Chairman assured them of the group’s full cooperation and emphasised that this was not the end of the matter as the youth organisation plans to consult with elders and leaders to determine further action.

However, some youth present at the gathering expressed dissatisfaction with the meeting’s outcome, leading to heightened tensions and increased security measures at the Aoyimti ground.
