CRO proposes measures for Dimapur’s multiple parking taxes
DIMAPUR — The state unit of Consumer Rights Organisations (CRO) has urged prompt action regarding the ongoing multiple parking taxation in Dimapur town and suggested measures.
In a letter to the CEO of Dimapur Municipal Council, the CRO stated that, after receiving complaints from consumers, it proposes the measures to be taken by the competent authority to ensure better accountability, transparency, a more convenient lifestyle, and a budget-friendly tax system for the public.
It suggested providing signboards for all designated parking areas and implementing a “one vehicle, one tax” system for a specific time period. If the time limit is exceeded, additional tax can be collected as required. Therefore, the entry and exit times should be recorded on the ticket.
The vehicle number or registration number should be clearly and visibly entered on the ticket. It also noted that certain parking spaces in the town are reserved and taxed on a monthly basis. In light of this, shopping malls, car accessory shops, and tyre repair shops can be taxed on a monthly basis, while business establishments must provide free parking for their customers.
Further, it noted that the rules and regulations for collecting parking tax should be specific, with a greater focus on public safety and assurance.
It also expressed a desire to know whether parking tax is applicable on national highways and how the public is benefiting from the collection of parking taxes.
