Citizens called to take an extra step for clean environment
The administrator of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), Manpai Phom, has called upon the citizens to take an extra step in order to provide an enabling environment for children to grow
DIMAPUR — The administrator of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), Manpai Phom, has called upon the citizens to take an extra step in order to provide an enabling environment for children to grow.
He lamented that the society has become more individualistic and have no concern about the outside environment, whereby bigger buildings affect the smaller houses and resulted in flooding during rainy season.
He stated this at launch programme of ‘Children, Youth and Civil Society Organisations’ campaign 2023 organised by Anma Integrated Development Association (AIDA) and Child Friendly Dimapur (CFD) held at AIDA conference hall on Saturday on the theme “One step towards creating clean and safe environment for the children.”
Phom was of the view that one step taken by the people would matter much for change to happen. He, therefore, stated that partnership between government and citizens is only solution for improvement from the present situation.
While insisting on the necessity for government to have a relook at the present system, Phom stated that government alone cannot provide total solution for the problems without the change of mindset and cooperation of the citizens.
He mentioned that the drainage and waste collection system need to be planned out in order to address the issues efficiently. Stating that DMC is trying to come up with various systems, he has sought the support from the public.
Phom shared that the DMC staff start their duty from around 3 am and collect door-to-door wastes and others. He added that the effort to collect waste was not effective as the truck engaged to collect waste could ply in the town area only till 7 am as per traffic regulation.
He further informed that DMC is on the process of coming up with a system for improving dry and waste collection.
Objectives of the campaign
The project coordinator of CFD, Carol Lotha, informed that the objective of the campaign was to capacitate the children, youth and adults to advocacy on the right of the children, raise awareness on clean and safe environment, mobilise the power of networking with different section of the society and create empathy and a sense of responsible citizenship towards creating a clean and safe environment for the children.
During the programme, short speeches were delivered by Akangjungla, director of news and administration of The Morung Express, on role of media towards creating clean and safe environment for children; P Aienla Longkumer on role of institution; and Mhonjan Humtsoe, president of Team Better Dimapur, on role of youths.
