Chairmen, deputy chairmen elected for councils in Mokokchung
MOKOKCHUNG — Elections for the chairmen and deputy chairmen of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), Mangkolemba Town Council (MTC), Tuli Town Council (TTC), and Changtongya Town Council (CTC) were held at the DC conference hall in Mokokchung on Saturday.
The elections were held in the presence of DC Mokokchung Thsuvisie Phoji. For the MMC, the newly elected councillors unanimously elected Imkongchuba as chairman and Lanuakum as deputy chairman.
For MTC, Supongtsungba and A Meren Walling were elected chairman and deputy chairman, respectively. Purtoshi was elected chairman and Alemchuba was elected deputy chairman for TTC. For CTC, Temjennungsang and Talimoa were elected chairman and deputy chairman, respectively.
The elections were followed by the felicitation of the PDA councillors from MMC, TTC, MTC, and CTC at the Town Hall.
NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, speaking on the occasion, expressed that the installation of the chairmen and deputy chairmen begins “a new hope, a new future” for the people of Mokokchung district.
He emphasised the importance of implementing a check-and-balance mechanism in the system by constituting committees and subcommittees, such as a budget estimate committee, audit committee, and social affairs committee, among others.
He also advised that for town planning and policy-making, councillors should refer to the Mokokchung Vision 2040 document. This document outlines the aspirations of the people of Mokokchung for a bright future and provides a framework for progress and development towards a shared common future.
Imkongmar Longkumer, MLA and Advisor for Minority Affairs & Sericulture, outlined key principles for effective governance to the NDPP party councillors. He emphasised the importance of transparency and urged the councillors to embrace accountability in their work.
He also encouraged the councillors to think innovatively and seek new solutions to problems.
He reminded the councillors to never lose sight of the people who supported them, urging them to keep the well-being of their constituents at the forefront of their actions. He affirmed that, as the closest link to the grassroots, councillors play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the common people and the government.
Temjenmenba, MLA and Advisor for Transport and Technical Education, cautioned against the misuse of power, urging leaders to understand that increased knowledge should foster greater humility. He called on the elected councillors to adopt a humble character, be diligent learners, and strive to acquire new knowledge daily.
He noted that the elected councillors have made history and that their actions will be judged by the people. He urged them to take their decisions wisely and to avoid hindering developmental work.
