Call for gender equality marks Women’s Day celebration

Institutions and organisations across Nagaland celebrated International Women’s Day on Wednesday by organising various programme to eliminate gender inequality on the theme ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.’

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

The day is also a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

ACID: The deputy commissioner of police (crime), Khekali Y Sema, has cautioned the women against cyber crimes as they can become victim in today’s digital world.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day programme organised by Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and National Domestic Workers’ Movement- Nagaland Region (NDWM) at Assisi auditorium, she stated that cyber space has its own advantages and disadvantages and that a Smartphone does not have any jurisdiction. She, therefore, said that everyone is susceptible to be a victim of cyber crime as anyone from the globe could attack them.

She pointed out that maximum cyber space crime is related to bank accounts, where fraudsters approach the victims to open bank accounts and take away the bank passbook and ATM cards after offering few thousands to the account holder. She has advised not to give their bank accounts to anyone.

She also stated that social media is another platform where many have fell victims. She advised the people not to click on links which could make the fraudsters access to personal information. She added that police has received many complaints of threats and blackmailing through social media. She, therefore, cautioned the women not to expose themselves to chatting and interacting with people, who they have not met.

She further maintained that gender equality and empowerment should come from within because no one can give gender equality except through change of mindset.

Rev. Sr. Juliana Periera, vice provisional superior, expressed that earlier the role of women was limited to household chores and due to this belief women did not go out to work or thought about going for work. She added that women now began realising that they too can have careers and a future and start taking up jobs and worked in many offices and companies.

Speaking on the theme, she stated that digital platforms and online learning tools have enabled girls and women to access educational resources and opportunities. She added that such platforms have provided them opportunities to share their experiences and connect with others who faced similar challenges.

She further encouraged women to understand their importance and strive for progress.

AIDA: ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) – Don Bosco, SBI Gram Seva programme, Dimapur, celebrated International Women’s Day with five adopted villages namely Khriezephe, Diezephe, Tsithrongse, Urra and Bade in Tsithrongse village.

On the occasion, AIDA-SBI Gram Seva took initiative to support women’s participation in the economic activities. It has handed over 240 kg of yarn to women weaving group, 150 plastic chairs to Yohruta SHG, three brush cutters to farmers SHG namely Atheru Mulong of Tsithrongse village.

Prizes were also handed over to winners of folk song competition to four villages, which was conducted on the occasion of World Radio Day on February 13.

Yimok Phom, assistant district programme manager of DRDA, Dimapur, was the special guest and Temsurenla Jamir, chief manager of sales and business development of SBI, RBO, Dimapur, was the guest of honour.

Rev. Fr. Nebu Mathew, rector of Don Bosco, Dimapur, blessed the materials and equipment handed over to the beneficiaries.

Watsu Mungdang: Watsu Mungdang, an apex body of Ao women, celebrated International Women’s Day at Aoer Kilem in Samgtemla Ward, in Mokokchung town on March 8.

Sheetal Gurung, from Women on Wealth, was the main speaker wherein she spoke on the topic “Embrace equity.” Stating that embracing equity was about coming together and creating opportunities, she has sought the need to come together and support one another, especially the women entrepreneurs in the society.

“If society is committed to equity, then we need to first comprehend the lives of women and only then should opportunities and resources be made available to women,” the speaker argued.

The president of Watsu Mungdang, S Arenla Longkumer, has underscored the need for women to be equipped with technological know-how in order to move forward with the advancement for an equitable and inclusive world.

On the occasion, Ketinaro Aier, Chubalem Kichu, and Sentirenla Ozukum also shared their experiences during the event.

Modern College: Gender Champion Club of Modern College, Piphema, celebrated International Women’s Day by organising an essay writing competition on March 7. The competition was conducted on topic ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.’ On the occasion, the college’s principal, Dr. Vitsou Yano, shared on the significance of the day. It informed that Tiajungla and Urmipem Mokung of BA 4th semester won the first and second prizes. The participants were encouraged with prize awards. A total of 60 BA 4th semester students have participated in the competition.

IUN: English department of ICFAI University Nagaland celebrated International Women’s Day on March 7 with Imtimongla Aier, IT educator, as the resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, she has stressed on the need to promote women in the fields of technology, which would result in more creative solutions and greater potential for innovation, meeting women’s need and promoting gender equity.

The event was attended by the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the English department, an update stated.

SJU: Commemorating International Women’s Day and to celebrate and acknowledge women in the work force, the MA II students of St. Joseph University along with two faculty members of Psychology and Counseling department organised an outreach programme at Tuesday Bazaar, 3rd Mile in Chekiye village on March 7.

It stated that the students provided refreshment and handed out ribbons to commemorate the day. The students also made awareness on women’s dignity and equity in the workforce.
