Awareness on ‘management of pig reproduction’ held in Jalukie

Officials of CVSAH, Jalukie and big breeders during the awareness programme on ‘Management of pig reproduction’ held at the college campus.

DIMAPUR — The Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics (VGO), College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (CVSAH), Jalukie, organised a one-day awareness programme on ‘Management of pig reproduction’ for pig breeders on Aug. 29.

The awareness programme was under the intramural research project funded by Central Agricultural University, Imphal titled ‘Performance of single and double artificial insemination in smallholder pig production system in Peren district of Nagaland,’ an update stated.

The programme was also conducted as part of the ‘100 days action plan activities’ of the college.

Dr. A Palanisammi, professor and head, Department of VGO and Dr. Gunjan Das, professor and head, Department of VMD and VCC, encouraged the breeders to adopt scientific approaches to improve reproduction capabilities of the existing stock.

Dr. I Shakuntala, dean of the college, underscored the need to acquire more technical knowledge on pig reproduction a through active participation for better pig production in the region.

In the technical session, various topics like ‘Heat detection of pigs and its importance in successful breeding,’ ‘Scientific breeding and farrowing management in pigs’ and ‘Critical managemental intervention of piglets’ were delivered by Dr. Bhabesh Mili, assistant professor, Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry; Dr. Tukheswar Chutia, principal investigator-cum- project cum coordinator of the programme, and Dr. Imtiwati, assistant professor, Department of Livestock Production and Management, respectively.

Further, a hands-on training pertaining to different steps of AI techniques in pigs was also provided to the pig breeders by Dr. Tukheswar Chutia.

A total of 31 pig breeders from Samziuram village, Jalukie ‘B’ village and Jalukie town Ward No. 9 and 8, and officials attended the programme.

Earlier, Dr. Tukheswar Chutia delivered the welcome address. Dr. Bhabesh Mili proposed vote of thanks.
