DIMAPUR — Assam Rifles troops and villagers doused a forest fire which broke out on March 10 in Longwa village area in Mon district.

The 27 Assam Rifles, Longwa, in a press release, said that the forest fire threatened to engulf an under construction Eklavya Model Residential School located between Longwa village and Phomching town.

“While volunteers and youth of the area made commendable efforts to douse the fire, lack of fire-fighting equipment and man power impeded their success.

“The volunteer force was soon joined by team of Assam Rifles troops and the fire was finally brought under control after two hours of intense fire fighting, preventing any loss to life and property,” the release said.

The cause of the forest fire is yet to be ascertained, it added.
