DIMAPUR — An incident in Mokokchung where two police personnel were accused of harassing a minor girl and threatening her family has drawn sharp condemnation from both the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) and the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT).

According to statements released by both organisations on Sunday, the incident occurred on July 25 when two police personnel, reportedly inebriated, harassed a six-year-old girl returning home from tuition classes with her elder sister.

The situation escalated the following evening when the accused police personnel allegedly returned to the family’s home and threatened the parents with physical force.

In its statement, the AKM expressed deep concern that law enforcement agents tasked with protecting citizens were instead jeopardising their safety.

Calling for an impartial investigation and accountability, it urged authorities to take appropriate disciplinary action against the personnel involved.

In a separate statement, the MTLT described the incident as “disturbing” and “unacceptable,” while emphasising the fear and trauma inflicted upon the young girl.

Assuring the family of its support in seeking justice, the MTLT said it would be closely monitoring the case.

Further, the MTLT is ready to take any responsibility in ensuring that Mokokchung remains a peaceful society, safe from any anti-social activities perpetuated by state and non-state actors, it asserted.

The MTLT demanded that the concerned authority dispense justice at the earliest.
