DIMAPUR — A two-day training on the Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (NSSK) was held on November 11 and 12 at the conference hall of the District Hospital Phek.

Dr. Seyiekhrietuo Rutsa, paediatrician at District Hospital, was the resource person. The NSSK training focused on essential newborn care and resuscitation, according to a press release.

Healthcare workers, including GNMs from the district hospital and community health centres (CHCs), were trained on the revised NSSK algorithm with the objective of reducing infant mortality rates and improving newborn health outcomes.

The training aimed to equip healthcare staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance service delivery in the delivery room, including how to prepare birth equipment, the equipment needed for birth, infection prevention, routine care for babies who cry at birth, and providing care during the first hour after birth, among other topics.

They were also orientated on how to monitor breathing and temperature in a newborn, examine newborns for common birth defects, and assist mothers with steps for effective breastfeeding, among other topics.
