Nagaland Congress asks govt. to reconsider review of NLTP Act, consult stakeholders

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) announced its opposition to the state government’s decision to review the contentious Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act of 1989.

The Act, enacted in 1989, was enforced in 1990, “in accordance with the strong and unanimous public sentiment that prevailed during those times,” the NPCC said in a press release on Sunday. The party has steadfastly upheld and stood by that decision till date, it added.

Stating that the state government’s decision to revisit the Act has divided Naga society, the NPCC urged the government to reconsider its decision and engage in extensive consultations with stakeholders before making any changes.

“We also appeal to the people of Nagaland to consider contemporary realities and approach the issue with an objective and conciliatory spirit,” it added.
