DIMAPUR — Team Better Dimapur (TBD) has officially launched an awareness campaign here on Friday on the theme “Let’s keep our city clean” with the primary goal to promote a cleaner environment during a programme held at Peres Restro, opposite Metro Hospital, Dimapur.
Speaking at the launch event, TBD president, Mhonjan Humtsoe, has emphasised the importance of spreading awareness and highlighted the necessity to maintain cleanliness in Dimapur. He also stressed the need to cultivate civic sense among individuals to maintain a clean environment.
Mhonjan informed that through the awareness campaign “Let’s keep our city clean,” the team intends to extend their outreach by visiting schools, colleges, and churches.
Informing that the campaign would continue for a minimum of one year, Mhonjan elaborated that their paramount objective was to instil a sense of awareness among the citizens of Dimapur about the imperative need to maintain cleanliness of their city. He further shared that the team has reached out to several schools and the responses were positive.
The administrator of DMC, M Manpai Phom, while lauding the initiative, noted that starting from the basics is essential to achieving their goals adding that simply organising events won’t lead to sustainable outcomes.
Phom has assured assistance from the DMC whenever required. He mentioned that DMC is evaluating the waste management system, which is currently in its initial phase. He added that they are conducting surveys in various wards to gather relevant information.
Highlighting certain challenges relating to waste collection and management systems, Phom informed that DMC is working out a strategy to tackle those issues and making necessary improvements. He added that DMC has issued a notification to DUCCF and GBs to check and control the rampant dumping of garbage into the drains in their respective colonies.
Phom also informed that DMC is in the process of introducing waste collection by using smaller vehicles to enable multiple waste collection trips throughout the day. He said the current waste collection is limited to morning hours from 5 am to 8 am.
