KOHIMA — Minister of Women Resources Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, on Thursday, exhorted the students to be diligent, honest, and consistent in their work.
She stated this during the 27th freshers’ day programme of Japfü Christian College (JCC) in Kigwema. She also inaugurated the Naga Cuisine Lab of the college, a first of its kind in the state.
Commending the freshers for their hard work and stepping into the new phase of their lives as a student, she stated that it is going to be challenging yet interesting and advised them to live well.
Kruse told the students to set their goals and strive hard to achieve success in life.
Kruse also underscored the need to take up vocational courses and skill-based courses stating that one cannot rely on government jobs.
“The introduction of research on Naga traditional cuisine and its inclusion in the undergraduate syllabus as part of skill enhancement course by the college is laudable,” Kruse said.
She also shared her delight about the college’s efforts to make the campus “The orchard campus’ by planting over 700 fruit trees of which some have started bearing fruits. Besides, she highlighted other sectors such as farming, floristry, gardening, art and craft etc that could be learned along with their degree.
While pointing out that the government under the New Educational Policy (NEP) is trying its best to align the curriculum and the industry, she asked the students to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the college and university.
She also stressed the need for the college to keep student learning relevant to the competencies demanded by the industry and added that the teachers and the students need to be well-equipped with technology and with all the things happening around the world.
Viewing that having a good degree is no longer enough to secure a job offer, she highlighted the need to undergo internship which has become an essential gateway for youth to make themselves stand out.
Also observing that the Naga society is faced with great challenges and opportunities as the youth face problems of unemployment, addiction, depression, and others, she exhorted the students to start looking for opportunities beyond their classroom lessons.
Also speaking on the occasion, Lunso, SDPO of Jalukie, advised the present students to work hard and make their dreams a reality, while the college’s principal, Dr. Visakhonü Hibo, expressed her gratitude to the visiting minister and other stakeholders for their support.
On the occasion, the college also felicitated, Ketosenü Kikhi, who bagged a gold medal at the recent Nagaland University result.
It was informed that the first Naga Traditional Cuisine (NTC) lab at the college premises was in line with the skill emphasis of NEP 2020. The college has initiated Naga traditional cuisine as part of its skill enhancement course under Nagaland University, wherein the main dishes of the 15 indigenous tribes of Nagaland would be studied, cooked and analysed for retention and transmission of Naga food as part of the cultural identity.
Further, it was informed the college is attempting to draw the food map of Nagaland as part of its research interest. Besides, the college has planted many indigenous fruit trees and other seasonal fruits that are adaptable to the environment on its 16-acre campus.
