Western Sümi Hoho lays down conditions on gas grid project by IGGL
DIMAPUR — The Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) has laid down certain conditions on the proposed execution of the North East Gas Grid Project by the Indradanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), under its jurisdiction.
The WSH, in a letter to the general manager of IGGL, emphasised the importance of safety measures in any infrastructure project, particularly one as significant and potentially impactful as the North East Gas Grid Project.
The hoho said it is imperative that comprehensive safety measures and awareness programmes are in place to ensure the well-being and security of the general public.
“Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that the IGGL has not yet provided a comprehensive safety awareness programme to address the potential risks and hazards associated with the project. This raises serious concerns about the safety and security of the communities that will be affected by the implementation of the gas grid,” read the letter.
The hoho also told the general manager that permission or endorsement for the execution of the grid project under WSH jurisdiction will not be granted unless IGGL fulfils some conditions.
It insisted that the IGGL present a comprehensive safety awareness programme that addresses all potential risks and hazards associated with the gas grid project.
This programme should include detailed information on emergency response protocols, safety measures during installation and operation, and regular awareness campaigns to educate the general public about gas-related safety precautions, it stated.
Also, IGGL must effectively communicate and convince the general public about the safety measures they have implemented and how they plan to mitigate any potential risks.
“This should involve engagement with local communities, public meetings and transparent dissemination of information regarding safety protocols, emergency contact numbers, and possible impacts of the gas grid,” it stated.
The hoho also demanded that the IGGL formally commit to ongoing monitoring, inspection and maintenance of the gas grid infrastructure to ensure its safety and operational efficiency. This should include regular audits, inspections, and prompt rectification of any identified safety or operational issues.
“The safety and well-being of the general public must always be paramount in any development project, and we cannot compromise on this aspect. If the aforementioned demands are not met, the Western Sumi Hoho shall withhold permission for the execution of the North East Gas Grid Project by the IGGL under its jurisdiction,” it added.
While requesting the IGGL to keep it informed about any action taken in response to its concerns and demands, the WSH further said that it will “closely monitor the situation and expect a prompt and satisfactory resolution”.
