DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has lauded the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) and Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) for the resolution adopted on October 7 to “jointly check the menace of unabated taxation.”

The DCCI in a press release said that the “far-reaching resolution” is primarily for the overall welfare of the society and should be applauded by one and all.

It said that as a business community, DCCI has always been at the forefront on the menace of illegal taxation, extortion, donation and syndicate system, which has been borne mostly by the business community for decades.

“As mentioned, rampant illegal taxation and extortion have literally crippled the local economy. One need not be reminded that many businessmen and prospective investors are shying away from investing in Nagaland, especially Dimapur,” the trade body said.

Trade and commercial activities, which were supposed to thrive in Dimapur, are now shifting to bordering towns in neighbouring Assam state, it added.

“Goods and materials coming from the freight trains to Dimapur have reduced drastically to nearly 70 percent. The goods transport fleet at Dimapur railway station which had strength of over 250 plus vehicles for transportation of goods, has now hardly 100 vehicles and declining rapidly,” the DCCI said.

It went on to say that the syndicate system looms large like a dark cloud over hard working local entrepreneurs.

“Even fresh vegetables coming from outside the state have fallen prey to this syndicate system. The items where GST has been paid should enter Nagaland without any hindrance because they are legal products and therefore should not be taxed multiple times,” the DCCI said.

The trade body urged the WSH and CPO to pursue the resolutions adopted and not to falter as the common people who are suffering are behind them.

With oncoming festive season, DCCI further reminded the peace loving citizens of Dimapur to be on alert as there will be a spurt in anti-social activities like donation drives, theft, and burglary and incidences of being duped.

The DCCI requested the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, to enhance security measures and deploy sufficient police personnel in the city, in the interest of the business community and the public in general.
