Tehok FC win 7th edition of Capt. N Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament
KOHIMA — Tehok FC of Mon won the 7th edition of the Late Capt. N Kenguruse Mahavir Chakhra Memorial Football Tournament, defeating Western Sumi Sports Association (WSSA) 2-1 in the final match held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, on Thursday.
Tehok FC took an early lead in the match with Nisede’s first goal in the 23rd minute. WSSA, however, demonstrated tenacity, equalising with Hevika’s strike in the 36th minute, resulting in a 1-1 tie at halftime.
The suspense continued after the break, but Samson’s second goal in the dying moments of the game secured Tehok FC’s victory.
Tehok FC won the coveted title and received a cash prize of INR 200,000 besides the trophy, while WSSA received INR 50,000 as the runners-up.
In the individual awards category, Homuka of WSSA earned the title of best goalkeeper; Sinenlo, who was also from the winning team, won best midfielder; and Lironthung Lotha of Tehok FC won best defender. Each received INR 6,000.
Weliso of Peren’s Liangmai FC received INR 10,000 as the tournament’s highest scorer, and Nisede of Tehok FC, named player of the tournament, received INR 12,000.
Tehok FC’s manager, physio, and coach each received INR 5,000, while the runners-up team’s officials each received INR 2,500.
Earlier in the day, Liangmai FC defeated St. Xavier’s College Jalukie 5-1 to claim third place and a cash prize of INR 25,000.
Major Gen. Vikas Lakhera, IGAR (North), graced the final match as the chief guest and emphasised in his speech the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork in nurturing young talent. He also expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army for the tournament’s success.
