SYU Open Futsal Tournament: Ignite FC edge G-Sports 1-0 to clinch c’ship

Ignite FC players, the champions of the second SYU Open Futsal Tournament, with organizers at Mojabi Futsal Turf, Mokokchung.

MOKOKCHUNG — Ignite FC emerged champions of second SYU Open Futsal Tournament after defeating G-Sports 1-0 in a thrilling final match played at Mojabi Futsal Turf, Mokokchung, on March 28.

The decisive lone goal before the breather by Ignite’s Thejasetuo sealed the fate of the rival G-Sport players. 

Ball possession wise, G-Sport were much superior. However, Ignite’s defensive counter strategy proved to be a productive ploy against the aggressive attacking opponent.        

The champions pocketed cash prize of INR 60,000 along with trophy while the second and third place winners were awarded cash prize of INR 40,000 and INR 10,000, respectively.

In the individual prize category, best goalkeeper award went to Imkumer of Ignite while Temsuyanger of Chargers FC with 13 goals was awarded the highest goal scorer.

Vanim of Trebuchet Club was adjudged the most promising player and Rato of Ignite was named player of the tournament. Genesis FAC was adjudged the best disciplined team.

Colonel Rahul Gurung, Commandant of the 12 Assam Rifles, Mokokchung, was the guest of honour in the closing ceremony.

The colonel commended the Salangtem Youth Union (SYU) for flawlessly organising the tournament, which not only encouraged youth participation but also provided them with a platform to excel in sports.

He highlighted the global recognition of futsal as a major sporting discipline and praised the MDFA for its contribution to the sports sector.

Additionally, he encouraged youth to consider joining the armed forces through schemes such as Agni Veer and SSC.

He expressed gratitude to the 76 youths from Mokokchung district who had registered for the Agni Veer scheme, while mentioning that the battalion was offering free coaching at its headquarters, to help them prepare for the exams.

The 3-day tournament was organised by the SYU under the aegis of Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) with 22 teams taking part in the tournament.
