DIMAPUR — The ‘Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar (My Life, My Clean City) campaign, based on the three Rs (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) of waste management, in Dimapur concluded on June 3, with more than 4000 kg of wastes collected during the campaign.

With non-governmental organisations and public in general embracing the RRR of waste management, a DMC official on Sunday told Eastern Mirror that around 4000 kg of wastes were collected from more than 10 wards under the municipality.

The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), which acted as the facilitator of the RRR campaign, had designated DDSC Stadium as the centralised temporary collection point (RRR Centre).

In the first RRR collection drive held on May 27, the DMC collected 1477.49 kg of wastes including plastic, old books, footwear, used clothes, toys and newspapers.

After segregation, the reusable items were distributed to the needy people at the Naga Shopping Arcade on May 31 with the assistance of Team Better Dimapur, the DMC official said.

The first drive started at 7 am in the morning and was scheduled to end by 1 pm, but it went on till the evening because of the active participation and support from the citizens, he said.

The second drive held on June 3 collected around 2700 kg of wastes.

After segregation of reusable and unusable items, unusable clothes will be distributed to garages and the e-wastes will be handed over to e-Circle, the first e-waste collection centre in Nagaland, the official updated.

The distribution of reusable items collected during the second drive will be held on June 7 at the Naga Shopping Arcade, while the declaration of results of the RRR drive will take place at DDSC Stadium on June 5, coinciding with the World Environment Day.

With the encouraging responses from the people to the RRR collection and distribution drives, it is clear that such initiatives will not only boost waste management but also promote a culture of reuse for environmental sustainability.
