Public urged to eliminate single-use plastics

DIMAPUR — Expounding that the central government has set target to eliminate single-use plastics by 2026, the member secretary of Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), K Hukato Chishi, has sought collective efforts to achieve the target.

Chishi stated this during the culmination of children, youth and civil society organisations campaign 2023-cum-exhibition and sale programme organised by ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) on Saturday held at Don Bosco campus in Dimapur on the theme “One step towards creating clean and safe environment for children.” He added that the state government has already enforced on the ban of single-use plastics.

Delivering keynote address, Chishi has sought urgent need to focus on solid waste management and encourage everyone to actively participate in managing the solid waste. He has attributed to inadequate solid waste management for frequent flooding taking place in Dimapur. In this regard, he urged the public to play their role to curb flooding in Dimapur.

He pointed that single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable plastics are harmful on the environment. Besides, he urged the farming community to avoid use of pesticides and herbicides in their endeavours to enhance productivity.

The welcome address was delivered by Rev. Fr. Roy George SDB, AIDA executive director, while a brief report on the campaign 2023 activities was delivered by the project coordinator of Child Friendly Dimapur (CFD), Garrol Lotha. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by, Chanda Sharma.
