DIMAPUR — The 12-hour road blockade imposed by the Phek District Maytas-Gayatri Damaged Victim Association (PDMGDVA) to protest the delay in the release of damage compensation, ended peacefully on Saturday.

During the first phase of agitation, two roads, namely: ‘2-lane Chakhabama – Zunheboto Road under Chozuba Sub-Division, from Sedzu Bridge (East) to Dzulhami jurisdiction bordering Zunheboto District (North); and 2-lane Pfutsero – Phek Road, from Rukizu Junction, Pfutsero (West) to Upper Khomi jurisdiction bordering Losami’s (East)’, were closed to traffic from 6 am to 6 pm.

However, more inconvenience awaits the public, as the association is intensifying the agitation after a break on Sunday.

Pushovoyi Nyekha, Convenor of PDMGDVA, told Eastern Mirror after the Saturday’s protest that it will begin the second phase of agitation on December 11 by extending the duration of the stir to one day.

‘Until we receive positive response from the government, we will continue with the intensified 24-hour blockade from December 11 as we have waited for too long for the government to release our due share,’ he said.

It may be mentioned that the association has been demanding the state government to release the long-pending compensation to the victims of damaged infrastructure along the two-lane Zunheboto – Chakhabama and Pfutsero – Phek Road under Phek district.

The PDMGDVA had earlier issued a press release statting that the blockade would affect the ‘entry point to 2-lane Chakhabama – Zunheboto Road namely Chesezu junction from Pfutsero, Runguzu Nasa junction from Phek via Thevopisu; Chozuba junction from Iganumi/Ghathashi; Chozuba junction from Kohima via Kijumetu/Khusoh and Sekruzu/Suthozu junction from Phek via Phugi and Ruzazho’.

“The entry point to 2-lane Pfutsero – Phek Road from Chizami to Sakrabami and Upper Khomi junction will be affected,” it added, while asking the commuters to avoid the two roads during the agitation.

However, the administration, Police, Armed Forces, hospital duty/patients, funeral, wedding, students, those writing exams and farmers involved in harvesting, will be exempted from the purview of the blockade.
