Nagaland: NWA felicitates wrestler Vekhonielu Curhah

KOHIMA — The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) on Thursday felicitated Vekhonielu Curhah, bronze medalist at United World Wrestling (UWW) Belt Wrestling Asian Championship 2023 at Jizzakh, Uzbekistan.

The programme was held at Talimeren Conference Room at NOA Building in Kohima.

Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), S Keoshu Yimkhiung who graced the event as special guest, in his address said Nagas by blood or by nature are sportive and that sports have been a part of Naga culture since time immemorial.

Keoshu however viewed that Nagas do not practice or value sports much, and underscored the need to make sports an endeavour.

Expressing delight at the achievement of the medallist, he credited Curhah’s parents for the upbringing and also acknowledged the support of the NWA.

The advisor also placed on record his happiness on the success of Vekhonielu Curhah for winning a medal at the international platform and becoming the first Naga woman and to bringing laurels.

Pointing out that Manipur state is advancing in the field of sports with prominent sports personalities like Mary Kom, he encourages Curhah that her success should be the beginning to aim higher and inspire other aspiring sportspersons.

The YRS advisor also assured that the government and the department would extend all possible support to the youngsters with projects and programmes. President NWA, Dr. Hiabe Zeliang, in his congratulatory message said Vekhonielu Curhah is the first lady from Nagaland to win a medal at an International event. He extended gratitude to the AITWPF for extending invitation to the NWA wherein the wrestlers have also brought fame and laurels.

The president also acknowledged the parents of Curhah and the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) for producing such a talented sportsperson.

He informed that belt wrestling have become popular in most part of Asia and that Naga wrestlers who have excelled at the national level should prepare themselves to face wrestlers at the international level.

The programme was chaired by Vilekho Bio, general secretary, NWA.

Among others, the programme was attended by Wezope Kenye, Secretary YRS; Kethosituo Sekhose, Director YRS, Megolhou Dolie, Addl. Director YRS, NWA officials and affiliated units, well wishers and family members.
