KOHIMA — The New Market Youth Organisation (NMYO) in Kohima is set to celebrate its golden jubilee on December 10 on the theme ‘Retrospect the past, celebrate the present, welcome the future.’

An update from the organisation informed that the minister of Women Resource and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, would be the special guest, while MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso would be the guest of honour.

It mentioned that established in the early part of 1973, NMYO, one of the oldest youth bodies in Kohima town, has been dedicated to coordinating various youth activities, fostering unity, enhancing social, cultural, educational, and sports initiatives, while contributing to the development and sanitation of the region.

Embodying its motto “Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re, uno animo” (gentle in manner, faithful in deed, with one mind), it added that NMYO has significantly transformed the outlook of the colony, maintaining a balance between a rural character and an urban outlook.

The organisation’s noteworthy contributions included peacekeeping and security efforts within the colony. Their commendable initiatives range from organising social works and sanitation drives to inspiring youth to excel in games and sports, particularly football.

It added that the New Market Football Team, a product of NMYO, carved its niche as one of the most formidable teams in the state. Their achievements included victories in the Kohima Senior Soccer League (1994), Youth Soccer Championship (1995 and 1998), Peace Cup (1998), 1st Dimapur Invitation Cup and other notable feats.

Under the guidance of NMYO, annual cultural events featuring song, drama, and debate competitions have become integral to the community’s cultural fabric.

In the realm of music, ZODIAC, the pop group from the colony, achieved recognition by winning the best band in the Nagaland beat contest (1988) and securing the 3rd position in the North East Beat Contest held at Shillong in 1990.

NMYO also takes pride in the academic achievements of its members with many being toppers in the HSLC examinations and garnering distinctions in various fields of study.

NMYO has invited all its members, past and present, especially those associated with the New Market Football Team, to join in the grand celebration on December 10.
