NFR workshop in New Bongaigoan gets GreenCo silver rating

DIMAPUR – Northeast Frontier Railway’s (NFR) carriage and wagon workshop at New Bongaigaon received the GreenCo silver rating by CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, India, in July 2023.

An update from NFR chief PRO, Sabyasachi De, informed that the workshop in New Bongaigaon is the first workshop in the Northeast region to achieve the GreenCo silver rating. The workshop achieved silver rating by completing its various green rating on-site works.

He explained that GreenCo is a rating system, an initiative by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to facilitate Indian industries to substantially improve their environmental friendly performance thereby saving both natural and financial resources.

He stated that NF Railway’s carriage and wagon workshop in New Bongaigaon, under the guidance of chief workshop manager, Partha Pratim Roy, has done tremendous work towards environment protection. He added that the Greenco silver rating was achieved with combined team efforts of all the officials.

Report stated that the workshop used energy efficient equipments and green infrastructure for the maintenance of rolling stocks. It has also reduced green house gases emission to a good extent in the last few years. Besides, carriage and wagon workshop in New Bongaigaon has taken various steps towards water conservation and waste management. As a result, overall specific water consumption has been reduced substantially during the last few years.

It stated that the workshop has norms for material conservation, recycling and recyclability so that no waste is sent to the landfill. It would either be reused or sold to certified recyclers. Besides, to meet the high energy demand of the workshop, solar rooftop has been installed as a part of generating renewable energy. Report further stated that the workshop team had undertaken awareness and training programmes regarding environment sustainability. To get this rating, the workshop has also achieved a specific energy reduction by implementing 100% LED lighting in workshop, it added.
