DIMAPUR — Newman Higher Secondary School, Tobu, marked a historic milestone on January 8, commemorating 50 years of dedicated service in the field of education.
The jubilee celebration was attended by special guest Wennyei Konyak, Deputy Commissioner of Mon; guest of honour Chemang Paul; guest speakers including Naiba Konyak, MLA of 55 A/C Tobu, and Nyamnyei Konyak, MLA of 48 A/C Moka.
The event was also blessed by the presence of the jubilee patron, Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, the school stated in an update.
The programme commenced with the traditional beating of the log drum by junior students, followed by the lighting of five jubilee candles led by the Bishop along with the dignitaries, symbolising five decades of imparting knowledge and igniting the light of education in a once-remote region.

In his address, the special guest encouraged students to compete with a healthy competitive spirit and strive for excellence in all fields.
The guest of honour emphasised the importance of hard work, willpower and determination as the key ingredients for achieving success in life.
Guest speakers Naiba and Nyamnyei lauded the Catholic missionaries for bringing modern education to the remote corner of Nagaland and nurturing young minds with discipline, values and vision.
The guest speakers also requested the Bishop of Kohima to initiate steps towards the establishment of a college in the near future.
The presidents of Konyak Union Tobu and TASU acknowledged the tireless efforts of both past and present management and appealed to the Diocese for the establishment of a Newman Catholic College, citing the genuine educational needs of the region.
The school’s alumni president also shared his reflections and appreciation during the programme.
Conveying his jubilee greetings, Bishop James Thoppil congratulated the school community and encouraged continued commitment to holistic education and moral values.
Earlier in the day, the jubilee monolith was inaugurated by Wennyei Konyak and blessed by the Bishop of Kohima. The jubilee memorial hall and library were inaugurated by Chemang Paul and Dr. Haku Anshao, Medical Officer, District Hospital Mon.
“Though Newman Higher Secondary School, Tobu is run by the Diocese, it remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Tobu and continues to serve as a beacon of learning and progress for the region,” the update stated.
