Nagaland’s solar push: 544 homes covered, 79 govt buildings solarised

KOHIMA — Nagaland has recorded 544 rooftop solar installations covering as many households under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with a total installed capacity of 1.83 MW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

The state has received 954 applications under the scheme, while INR 3.96 crore in subsidy has been released for the installations.

Dimapur accounts for the largest share of the state's rooftop solar uptake, with 330 households covered through 1.12 MW of installed capacity. It was followed by Kohima, with 85 installations and 0.29 MW, and Chümoukedima, with 75 installations and 0.25 MW.

Mokokchung recorded 37 installations with 0.12 MW of capacity, while Peren had 14 installations and 0.04 MW.

The remaining districts recorded considerably fewer installations. Tuensang had five households covered, while Wokha and Niuland had one each. No installations were recorded in Mon, Phek, Tseminyu, Zunheboto, Kiphire or Longleng in the data.

The scheme's monthly data for 2026 shows a gradual increase in activity. Nagaland recorded 42 installations in May, 73 in June and 108 in July — the highest monthly figure in the data provided. Installations stood at 51 in August and 42 in September.

The state recorded 87 applications in May, 111 in June, 125 in July, 115 in August and 72 in September.

Government buildings lag

Meanwhile, only 79 of 1,534 government buildings identified as feasible for solarisation in Nagaland have been solarised, accounting for about 5% of the total.

Among the north-eastern states for which data was available, Assam had 61 of 407 feasible government buildings solarised, or about 15%, while Manipur had 27 of 238, or 11%.
