Nagaland government will close 34 government schools, merge 17, and upgrade seven as part of a statewide education restructuring from 2026–27.

KOHIMA — The Nagaland government has ordered the closure of 34 government primary and middle schools for zero enrolment or non-functioning, approved the merger of 17 other schools, and upgraded seven middle schools to high schools as part of a statewide restructuring of the school education network.
The decisions were taken by the State Level Education Committee (SLEC) at its meeting held on December 19, 2025, and notified by the School Education Department on January 20, based on physical verification reports submitted by departmental officers.
According to the notification, the 34 government primary schools and government middle schools listed in the annexure were found to have zero enrolment or were non-functional and have been notified for closure with effect from the academic session 2026–27.
The schools ordered for closure are spread across several districts, including Kiphire, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Phek, Meluri, Tuensang, Shamator, Wokha and Zunheboto.

They include GPS Old Monger, GPS Shishimi and GPS Keor in Kiphire; GPS Anaki A in Mokokchung; GPS Kongan B in Mon; GPS Tohokhu in Niuland; GPS Chesezu Nasa in Phek; GMS Sangdak in Tuensang; GPS Kelongru in Shamator; and 11 schools in Wokha district. In Zunheboto district, 11 schools, including GMS Vekuho New and GMS Satakha Village, have been listed for closure. (See Table)

The department has also revoked earlier administrative decisions relating to school restructuring. It revoked the merger of the middle section of GPS and GMS Kandinu Upper with GHS Kandinu and the merger of GPS Industry Colony with GPS Meluri Town. It also revoked the down-gradation of GMS Yongkhao to GPS Yongkhao.
Meanwhile, the SLEC has approved the merger or amalgamation of 17 government schools based on verification reports and recommendations of departmental officers and stakeholders. The mergers will take effect from the current academic year 2026–27.
Among the approved mergers are GPS Kisetong with GPS Kisetong Sector B Village, GPS Longmatra Town Station B with GPS Longmatra Town Station A, and GPS Anatonger with GMS Anatonger in Kiphire district; GPS Khono Thevo with GPS Chayagei, GMS Kruoliezou with TM GHSS, and GPS High School with RGHSS in Kohima district; and GPS Pangti B with GPS Pangti, GMS Yongchucho with GMS Sunglup, GMS Tsopo with GMS Meshangphen, and GPS Yannyu Village with GMS Yannyu in Wokha district.
Other mergers include GMS Pfutsero with GHSS Pfutsero and GPS Zhavame A with GMS Zhavame in Phek; GPS Kandinu Sector B with GMS Kandinu Upper in Tseminyu; GPS Shiponger A with GPS Shiponger B in Shamator; GHS New Chingmei with GMS Chingmei in Tuensang; and GPS Meluri Town with GMS Meluri Town in Meluri.
The department said that school buildings vacated due to mergers will remain the property of the School Education Department and will be used for educational purposes such as hostels, teachers’ quarters or other scholastic needs.
The SLEC has also approved the upgradation of seven Government Middle Schools to Government High Schools. The upgraded schools are GMS Daklane and GMS Phezoucha in Kohima district; GMS Pihekhu in Niuland; GMS Noklak Station in Noklak; GMS Rukizu (Pfutsero) in Phek; GMS Jalukie Town Sector B in Peren; and GMS Tuensang Village in Tuensang.
In addition, the SLEC has granted provisional permission for the opening of 23 new private schools across the state.
The new private schools include St Apostolic Mission Residential School, New Ebenezer School, Emerald School, St Mary’s School, Singrijan, and Patkai Valley Academy in Chümoukedima district; River Life School, Arete Foundation School and Raindrops School in Dimapur district; Wonderbeats School, Heartshome School and Nakicha Academy in Kohima; Step by Step School, Sycamore Tree School, El-Shaddai School, Bangjum Primary School (Longzang), Royal School, Shakam Brighter School, and Bangjum Primary School (Nyahnyu) in Mon; Moria Mission Jubilee School in Mokokchung; Green Hill School in Phek; Saint Edmund’s School in Tuensang; Bright Wave in Zunheboto; and Shilloi Lake School in Meluri.
