Neiphiu Rio mourns NNC president Adinno Phizo, recalling her decades of commitment to the Naga political movement and legacy
DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday mourned the death of Naga National Council (NNC) president Adinno Phizo, describing her as an important figure in Naga political history whose life was closely tied to the movement’s legacy.
In a condolence message, Rio recalled meeting Adinno at her family home in Bromley, London, in 1990, along with his wife. He said their association continued after her return to Nagaland, when he met her on several occasions and witnessed her attachment to the Naga people and her commitment to the cause she had devoted her life to.
Adinno, the eldest child of the late AZ Phizo, spent decades carrying forward her father’s political legacy. She stood alongside him during the difficult years of the Naga political movement and later led the NNC, remaining a prominent voice for its historical position.

Rio said she had served as NNC president for more than three decades following her father’s death in 1990. Her years in London, eventual return to Nagaland and continued engagement with the Naga political issue reflected a life of commitment, sacrifice and perseverance, he added.
Her death, Rio said, marked not only the loss of a member of the Phizo family but also the passing of someone who had witnessed and participated in several decades of the Naga political journey.
“Whatever our individual perspectives may be on the political questions that have shaped our history, the contributions and sacrifices of those who have devoted their lives to the Naga people deserve to be remembered with dignity and respect,” the chief minister said.
On behalf of the state government and his colleagues, Rio conveyed condolences to the Phizo family, the NNC and all those mourning her death.
