Live how you want to be remembered, Nagaland legislator Kikon tells students
KOHIMA — Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Achumbemo Kikon, on Wednesday, told students to live a life they want to be remembered for.
Addressing the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) 44th Foundation Day-cum-degree toppers felicitation programme held at the State Academy Hall in Kohima, Achumbemo Kikon, who was also the former speaker of ANCSU, said the society expects big from the toppers.
Telling them not to fail the society, he asked the gathering to think of villages and put more effort towards investing in the people.
The Naga People’s Front (NPF) leader lamented that only a few read books today, with people relying too much on search giant Google. He expressed fear that society will be doomed because of half-cooked knowledge.
Nagaland’s literacy rate has increased but the state cannot accommodate all the degree holders into the government system as it is already saturated and the government is now mooting to reduce (the number of employees), he said.
Citing the current situation, he advised the graduates to become assets of society instead of liabilities and to leave behind a legacy to be remembered.
Earlier in the programme, ANCSU president Toito D Chishi delivered the presidential address, while Maongnaro Longkumer of Modern College Kohima and Tsazila Sangtam of Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu, spoke on behalf of the toppers.
On the occasion, Imtinaro Imsong, Education Secretary of ANCSU, informed that in the sixth year of felicitation, a total of 53 degree toppers — 21 under Nagaland University, 15 from Patkai Christian College (PCC), 10 from Kohima Science College and seven from technical education — were felicitated.
The programme was chaired by Ikato Zhimomi, Assembly Secretary of ANCSU, invocation pronounced by Rev. Dr. Wepre Mero, Pastor Chakhesang Baptist Church Ministers Hill Kohima, and a vote of thanks proposed by Dzüzuve Swuro, Assistant General Secretary of ANCSU.
